Description
Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis are three serious bacterial infections prevented by the DTaP (for children) and Tdap (for adults and adolescents) vaccines.
1. Diphtheria
- Caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
- Affects the throat and upper airways, producing a thick membrane that can block breathing.
- Can cause heart and nerve damage due to toxin production.
- Spreads through respiratory droplets from an infected person.
2. Tetanus (Lockjaw)
- Caused by Clostridium tetani, found in soil, dust, and animal waste.
- Enters the body through cuts or wounds.
- Produces a toxin that leads to painful muscle stiffness and spasms, especially in the jaw and neck.
- Can be life-threatening if untreated.
3. Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
- Caused by Bordetella pertussis.
- Highly contagious respiratory infection with severe coughing fits, followed by a “whooping” sound.
- Can lead to pneumonia, seizures, and even death in infants.
- Spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing.
DTaP/Tdap Vaccine
- DTaP: Given to children in a 5-dose series (ages 2 months to 6 years).
- Tdap: A booster vaccine for adolescents and adults to maintain protection.
- Td: A tetanus-diphtheria booster recommended every 10 years.
