Description
The DTP/DTaP/Tdap vaccine provides protection against three serious bacterial and viral diseases:
- Diphtheria: A bacterial infection that affects the throat and airway, causing breathing difficulties, heart failure, and nerve damage.
- Tetanus (Lockjaw): A bacterial infection that causes muscle stiffness and spasms, which can be life-threatening.
- Polio (Poliomyelitis): A viral disease that can lead to paralysis, muscle weakness, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure.
Vaccine Types
- DTaP: Given to infants and young children (under 7 years old).
- Tdap: A booster for older children, teenagers, and adults.
- DT/Td: Variants used when pertussis (whooping cough) is not included.
- IPV: The inactivated polio vaccine, often combined with DTaP/Tdap.
Schedule
- DTaP/IPV series starts at 2 months of age with booster doses at 4, 6, and 18 months and 4–6 years.
- Tdap booster is recommended at 11–12 years and during pregnancy for additional protection.
- Td boosters are given every 10 years.
The vaccine is safe and highly effective in preventing these serious diseases.
